How do I get a homestead exemption?

Every homeowner in the state of Texas can claim an exemption of approximately $5,000 per year of the total assessed value of his/her homestead. The law applies to state property levies. To qualify, the homeowner must meet the following requirements:

  • possess title to the property on January 1st of the current tax year
  • property must have applicant’s residence on or before January 1st of the current tax year

This is a one time filing. For more information, you can contact the Dallas Central Appraisal District at (214) 631-0910.
